The complete works of William Shakespeare (abridged)
Dear friends, Romans, and other countrymenÂ…
Last academic year, GUTS (or Groningen University Theatre Society) celebrated its 40th anniversary, and in honour of this milestone, revived one of the most successful plays in recent history: The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), which had already been performed by GUTS about a decade ago.
Written by, and for, three people, originally performed by GUTS with a cast of eight, and given extra performances due to its overwhelming success, GUTS brought the play back to its core of three actors, GUTS decided to ‘do it one more time!’
They lied. They will do yet it again.
The cast was kindly asked by Cultural Student Centre USVA to play The Complete Works once more, and was more than enthusiastic about it. They’ll be performing this unprecedented feat (again) on the opening night of the Groningen Student Theatre Festival – twice in a row. Madness, yet there’s method in’t!As three well-meaning guys attempt to enact the complete works of William Shakespeare, they stumble upon a number of problems: how to do Othello without a black actor, how to make Titus Andronicus interesting for people who don’t quite know what went on in ancient Rome, how to make the comedies funnier than the tragedies, and how to re-enact the greatest love story ever written when all you’ve got is three guys.
On Tuesday, 7 October 2008 – the opening night of the Groningen Student Theatre Festival – GUTS will again put on this hilarious celebration of Shakespeare’s genius, the three acting gentlemen attempting to portray all of his works in less than one-and-a-half hour, cross-dressing wherever possible and basically giving the audience a roller-coaster ride of fun.
The Complete Works of William Shakespeare, Abridged (by Adam Long, Daniel Singer, and Jess Winfield) will be performed twice by Kees de Vries, Tom Wilcox, and Cees Krottje on Tuesday, 7 October.
Venue: OUTheater (the former Universiteitstheater in the Harmoniegebouw); Oude Kijk in ‘t Jatstraat, Groningen.
Time: 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.
Entry fee: 4 Euros
